“New to Causality”

What we’re looking for

We are inviting academic researchers to apply for funding to lead collaborative and interdisciplinary proof-of-concept research projects.

Projects should explore causal AI methods in areas like machine learning, large-scale causal discovery, and decision support. Research must apply these methods to healthcare challenges, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and mental health. Ethical risk monitoring and policy applications are also encouraged.

Who can apply?

Lead applicants must be an academic researcher in a UK-based institution eligible for UKRI funding.

Projects must involve at least two partners. Partner types include (but are not limited to): industry (large and SMEs), clinicians, healthcare bodies (e.g. NHS, NICE), charities, data providers, and policymakers and regulators. 

Funding details

  • Total fund for Round 1: ~£250,000 (3 - 5 projects)

  • Funding: 80% fEC (in line with EPSRC guidance)
    Note: we will fund DI and DA costs.

  • Duration: 6 - 12 months (starting in 2025)
